1. Story Telling (Elementary School)
Kwame Dawes tells a range of folk tales, original stories and traditional stories that are full of humor and compelling lessons. He tells these stories with song and movement, involving the children in call and response participation. Dawes works with small groups and groups as large as a typical school assembly.


2. I Saw Your Face (Elementary Schools)
Using a power point presentation, Dawes reads from his book I Saw Your Face. He will tell the story of the making of the book, the collaboration with Tom Feelings and the process of moving from an idea to a book. The reading is followed by an additional Power point presentation that gives cultural and geographical information about all the countries and cities mentioned in the book. The presentation is followed by a book-signing.


3. Writing workshops (Elementary Schools)
Kwame Dawes works with fourth and fifth graders who have an interest in writing creatively. He introduces them to the fundamentals of writing poetry through a series of engaging and entertaining exercises that are quite challenging and rewarding. Students are encouraged to read their work before the class. At the end of the workshop, time is devoted to a question and answer session.


4. Christmas in Ghana/ Christmas in Jamaica: Stories and Songs (Elementary Schools)
In these sessions, Kwame Dawes shares songs, personal stories, folk stories and a series of anecdotes about Christmas traditions in Jamaica and Ghana. This session is usually interactive as it seeks to get the young people to think about the cultural practices in different cultures and in their own culture.


5. How I Became a Writer (Elementary Schools)
Kwame Dawes gives a talk about his journey towards being a writer. He begins with his childhood and continues to talk about the most influential factors that may have led to his interest in writing. He also introduces the students to many of his books by talking about how they came to be written and published.
