1. How I Became a Writer (Middle Schools)
Kwame Dawes gives a talk about his journey towards being a writer. He begins with his childhood and continues to talk about the most influential factors that may have led to his interest in writing. He also introduces the students to many of his books by talking about how they came to be written and published.


2. How to Read and Write About a Poem (Middle Schools)

These sessions are targeted to students who are just beginning to do poetry units that involved some analysis. Dawes begins with the fears and concerns of the students about understanding and then helps them to understand tone, and then the various literary devices found in poems through pointed examples and through the examination of specific poems. During these sessions, Dawes helps students to read poems with confidence, and prepares them to start writing critically about poems.


3. Intensive Poetry Writing Workshops (Middle Schools)
The poetry writing workshops are geared for students who may have an interesting in writing. Dawes uses a series of writing exercises that the students will do in class to spur them into writing pieces. The sessions will help students to look for various qualities that will enhance their experience of reading and writing poems.


4. The Pleasures of Reading (Middle Schools)
In this workshop, Dawes uses anecdotes, personal stories and a sharing of a number books to introduce students to the pleasures of reading. This is an interactive sessions which encourages students to talk about books that they like and to find ways to expand the range of books they read.


5. I Saw Your Face: The Making of a Book (Middle Schools)

In this session, Dawes tells the story of the making of his children’s book, I Saw your Face. The story begins with a meeting between Tom Feelings and Dawes and takes the students through the process of collaborative work, and then beyond that to the process of securing publishers and working through a manuscript with editors. He talks about the design work, the use of blurbs and the business of the publishing world.
